Birmingham University Air Squadron is a close-knit family of students who meet regularly at training nights, sports events, camps and other activities. The social aspect of the squadron is very important as it allows all members, staff and students apart, to make bonds in a more relaxed environment and become better acquainted. This, in turn, improves the performance capabilities of the squadron, thus social events are an important part of the UBAS calendar. The main annual social events are detailed below.
Winter/Summer Ball
A large number of UBAS staff and students attend the Cosford Officers' Mess Winter and Summer Balls. These are usually formal, lavish affairs, which are designed to impress both you and your guests.
Annual Dinner
The Annual Dinner is one of the highlights in the UBAS calendar. It is a formal function which all students must attend, dressed in Interim Mess Kit. A number of VIPs, including senior university staff and high-ranking Service officers, are invited by UBAS to attend the function.
Lunch of the Year
The Lunch of the Year is a training event for the Annual Dinner. The format is very similar to the Annual Dinner itself, and is designed to make students aware of the procedures of the Annual Dinner. All students must attend the event, which has a (relatively) relaxed approach, dressed in flying suits.
Christmas Draw/VTAe Drinks
The proceed from the sale of draw tickets in the weeks prior to this function are used to purchase prizes. During the Christmas Draw, those fortunate to purchase winning tickets are presented with their prizes. This event also gives the squadron the opportunity to acknowledge the crucial support provided by VT Aerospace, ATC and other supporters of the squadron at Cosford.
